 Harmony Families,
Open your hearts to a family in need this holiday season and support the Husky Helping House! Please look over the selected items for your classroom's child, sign up for one, and have the item in to your child's teacher no later than Friday, December 11th.

I hope that each one of you have a wonderful time with your loved ones over the break.  We have so much for which to be thankful. Many people in our community however are not as fortunate this holiday season; therefore, we would like to continue our annual tradition at Harmony Elementary called, The Husky Helping House.

Each December we adopt a family in need and donate items to make that child’s holiday season extra special. This season we are asking for your help! Below you will find a link for your classroom’s Husky Helping House.  Click on the link to sign up for an item- it’s that easy! We are encouraging the children to care by showing concern for others. We are asking that each family consider donating to our Husky Helping House in any way possible. Important Information

*I hope everyone had a terrific fall break!  Please remind students of school expectations and being proactive.

*Check out the new photos on our class blog! http://mrshornsfirstgradeclass.blogspot.com/

*Red Ribbon Week kicks off this week.  Please wear red to school on Monday, October 26th.

*Our Character Costume Party is this Friday!  First graders are encouraged to dress like their favorite (or semi-favorite or a familiar) character from a book on Friday, October 30st.  No need to panic or spend money.  Get creative and look through old costumes, toys, clothing.  For example: while I really, really love the book Go Dog, Go! - I do not own anything that would be suitable for a dog costume.  But, I do have a Viking costume from a Halloween party...so I may dress up as the main character from How to Train Your Dragon because I also like that book.  I also enjoy reading The Recess Queen - and all I need for that is my regular clothes and a crown that I wore at my birthday party.  Please send in the book that matches the character as we will be getting together to show off our costumes and read with all the first grade classes.  The public library and school library are great resources for this!  No masks, please.

Here are three exciting event coming up!  Please send me an email if you’d like your child to participate:

Build a Lego city with  Mrs. Horn

Do you like to build?  Let's build a Lego City!  This will need architects, engineers, and designers!  I am looking for a crew to build a Lego city.  Together we can work to design stores, parks, playgrounds, and houses.  We will make cars, roads, and schools.  We will make everything we need to make our city look like a real city!  If you are interested, bring your imagination and come build, build, build with Mrs. Horn!

The more architects we have the bigger and better our city will be!  All grade levels are welcome.  Send a note or email and a check for $15 per child (payable to Harmony PTA) and join us on Thursday, November 5th from 2:30-3:45pm.  A small snack and drink will be provided.  Everyone’s a winner!

Spa Day with Mrs. Horn

Do you like to be pampered like a princess?  Let Mrs. Horn treat you to a spa day!  Salon services include a pretty manicure, stylish hair style (with ribbons and bows if desired), and make-up.

The more princesses that join the better!  Sign up for just $15 per child and join us on Thursday, January 14th  from 2:30-3:45pm.  A snack and drink will be provided.

Questioning

Today I brought in an item the students might not know...(an eyelashes curler). We used our Thinking Stems chart to come up with questions about my mystery item. Student then made predictions..."Is it an eyebrow cutter?  Is it an ear lobe trimmer? What about a tooth puller-outer!"
Students shared some of their Mystery Items and we all enjoyed this apple peeler/cutter.

Weekly News

Dear Families,

Important Information

*Please turn in your first grade fee if you haven’t already.  We need to order class t-shirts before we schedule our first field trip.  Class t-shirts are a safety layer that help us quickly identify our students.

*Please make sure to check your child’s take-home folder every night and discuss what we are working on in school.  You may keep the completed work that comes home.  Promptly return any paperwork. Also make sure to read, sign and record your child’s reading in your child’s planner nightly.

*Be sure to send a healthy nut free snack and bottle of water each day for snack time.

*School begins promptly at 7:40am each day.  The children have many morning responsibilities to take care of in order to be fully prepared for the school day.  That being said, please make sure your child arrives in plenty of time to take care of these tasks.  If possible, I strongly encourage you to have your child eat breakfast at home.  Students who eat breakfast in the cafeteria have 5 minutes or less to take care of their morning jobs which often leads to a rocky start to their day.

*We have been practicing our safety drills all week (fire, tornado, earthquake and lockdown).  Talk to your child about what they do in each situation and why it is so important.

* If you would like to volunteer in the school or go on a field trip, please make sure you have attended the Parent Confidentiality Training.  Below is another available date to attend.

* Classroom jobs will be given on Monday.  There were a lot of students that wanted the same job.  Please remind your child this weekend that all jobs to help our classroom are important.  Also, we will be switching jobs during the year so they may have an opportunity later.  Thank you for your support.

Our Class Parent Orientation is:  Wednesday, September 9th. I am currently in a Principal Program with Bellarmine, and have class on the 10th, which is why I am having our orientation on the 9th. I will provide Confidentiality Training after our Orientation in our classroom. You will be all set! :)

*Classroom wish list:

-a big box of binder page protectors

Thank you to Mrs. Gudibanda and Mrs. Burgan for the crayons and clothespins!

What are we learning?

Word Work

Our words of the week are must, four, about.  Please practice reading and spelling the sight words nightly.  We are also studying vowels.

Writing

We are learning about capital letters, punctuation and nouns.

Our class is learning about the classroom library and how to select a book that is just right.  We will be starting DRA2 reading assessments this week.
